Traffic in Dakar

Traffic is dense at rush hours, especially mornings and late afternoons, on roads linking the centre with the suburbs and the motorway. Add a margin to your journeys and avoid the busiest times when you can.

Watch for pedestrians, two-wheelers and public transport that stops suddenly. Keep a generous distance and drive defensively.

Parking

Spaces are limited downtown. Prefer guarded car parks or those recommended by your accommodation, and never leave valuables visible in the car.

Fuel

Petrol stations are plentiful in Dakar and on main roads. Fill up before a long trip. The fuel-level rule at return is in your contract: check it at pick-up.

At night and outside Dakar

Outside main roads, lighting can be limited and animals or obstacles may appear. Avoid driving long unfamiliar distances late at night, or choose a driver.

Safety rules

Always wear your seat belt, respect speed limits and checkpoints, keep documents in the vehicle and avoid using the phone while driving. If an officer signals you, stay calm and courteous and present your papers.
